biodiversity

The coexistence of lush tropical rainforest and the richest coral reefs on Earth produce unequalled biodiversity. The only thorough scientific survey undertaken to date is Edvard Hviding and Bob Johannes pioneering study of indigenous Marovo knowledge of food-fish behaviour [if anyone can provide a weblink to this paper please let us know] - no other scientific work has yet been undertaken to begin to catalogue this incredible diversity except for The University of Quennsland who have embarked on a multi-year 'Health of Marovo Lagoon' Project covering several aspects of Marovo's marine ecosystems. For further info on UQ's excellent work in Marovo go to http://www.marine.uq.edu.au/marbot/index.htm

As part of our commitment to our environment, conservation and sustainability, Wilderness has embarked on a simple identification programme, beginning with marine fishes in our small Marine Protected Area around the Lodge, and over time - perhaps many years - encompassing reef life in it's entirety and also the totally unknown terrestrial component of 'that which is Marovo'. Consequently species ID in the lists that follow is not of scientific quality, and is a collaborative effort amongst Lodge management, local community and guests, though it is hoped this information will create an awareness within the scientific community of the scale of biodiversity and endemism we have here, and through cooperative links result in enhanced knowledge and conservation capacity.

If you have visited Wilderness and have identifications to contribute, we welcome your input and if IDs are new to the lists your credit will be included with the listing. Please if you need help in sending files. There is also a growing collection of photos available in our image gallery pertaining to species I.D.

****NEWS**** Friday March 31, 6

A very successful Marovo World Heritage Workshop concluded today after five days of intense discussion, fact-finding and presentations hosted by Uepi Resort in Marovo Lagoon. Broad support was voiced in pursuing World Heritage Listing for Marovo from both UNESCO reps, overseas and international experts, and a cross-section of Marovo stakeholders. A strategy was agreed upon to embark on an extensive pan-Marovo consultation process to develop understanding of and support for World Heritage Listing of the greater Marovo area and Tetepare Island.

There is a great deal of work required to ensure this process is as inclusive as possible - the possibility of Listing hinges on broad support and consensus - and agencies and individuals committed to a sustainable future for Marovo are encouraged to lend their support. A summary of the Plans of Action developed at the Workshop will be included on this webpage as soon as they come to hand, along with contact details for those wishing to lend support. Stay tuned.

****NEWS**** Saturday April 1, 6

An expedition to conduct a Rapid Inventory of vertebrates and flora of Mt Mariu [the0 foot peak of Gatokae Island] with particular attention to the summit cloud forest has been planned for mid-May 6. The Wilderness Lodge is organising the trip with leading Solomon Island scientists, biologist Patrick Pikacha from Marovo and botanist Myknee Sirikolo from Choiseul. Results will be posted on this page as soon as the trip is completed.
