Very warm, tropical climate with moderate rainfall and plenty of sunshine. For more details read on...... the wilderness lodge is located at the eastern extremity of the Western Province of the Solomon Islands at 8° 47.´S ° 13.´E This lies in the northern part of the South Pacific tradewind belt with two fairly distinct seasons - southeasterly tradewinds from June to mid October, and northwesterly monsoon from late December thru early April. Variable winds and fine weather typify the interim periods. The tradewind season being typified by 22 - 25°C nights and 26 - 30°C days, cool seabreezes everyday with lower humidity, and occasional brief showers and rainy periods. Winds typically peak at 10-15 knots in the early afternoon and drop off at night. Some years, such as 2 and 3, the tradewinds can average 15 - 20 knots in the afternoons. The monsoon sees temperatures rise a degree or two, calm weather interspersed with squally periods, though the lodge is protected from much of this weather by Mt Mariu. Cyclones in the main Solomons chain are rare, there being no record of a tropical cyclone crossing the Western Province. Tropical depressions form in the Solomons region occasionally between December and May and move to the southeast or southwest, occasionally becoming cyclones. We are fortunate enough, however, to receive beautiful groundswell surf from these distant storms on occasion. Being only 8 degrees south of the equator spells of light, variable winds and fine weather are common throughout the year, as are very brief, intense downpours. 0 foot Mt Mariu generates a light, cool nightly land breeze (being most apparent in the very early morning) year round which makes the warm nights very comfortable. Ocean temperature ranges from 26.5°C when tradewinds push cooler water up from further south and also stir colder subsurface water to the surface. The warmer monsoon season sees water temperatures rise to 29-31°C. The equatorial sun heats the shallower lagoons during the day to around 34°C and the reef pools as high as 40°C during the mid year spring low tides. From an activity perspective, the June-October tradewinds and the December-March monsoon can at times make boating a bit wet, however the dive sites and fishing grounds around the offshore islands are accessible in all weather. Trips to Kavachi and the oceanic reefs, seamounts and FADs (5 - 20 nautical miles offshore) are more frequent during the interim periods October-December and April-June. Being situated on the beach and specifically designed to remain cool and comfortable year-round, the lodge is the perfect base in any weather.
